Three members of Steamboat’s Ski Patrol team have been on a two-week mission to China to share their expertise.  The trio started off in the north-east at Heavenly Lake, Changbaishan and Songhua, before travelling to Chongli to visit Thaiwoo and finishing off in Beijing at Jundushan Ski Field.

At all three locations, the pisteurs imparted numerous safety protocols, mountain and snow management techniques and best equipment practise upon their Chinese hosts.

This latest ski patrol mission is just one of numerous Sino-Western expertise sharing projects in the ski industry, with other examples occurring in the fields of ski instruction, resort management and resort architecture and construction.

Mayor Wang Anshun, largely responsible for Beijing’s successful Olympic 2022 bid, has been replaced in the role by Cai Qi.  It is believed that he will head into semi-retirement in a government think tank, before he reaches 65, the mandatory retirement age.  The demotion could be taken as a criticsm of Wang’s close links with disgraced official Zhou Yongkang, or equally of his failure to deal with Beijing’s notorious air pollution issues during his time in office.

According to the latest ISIA minutes, the ISIA appears to be looking to move away from the current free-for-all of multiple national organisations offering instructor training, and to work with a single, authorised organisation representative of the entire Chinese industry.

Presently, numerous international bodies & authorities are contracted by the various resorts to train Chinese ski instructors.  Successful candidates are therefore awarded a variety of qualifications, generally delivered via translators and often nationalised for the Chinese market.

The ISIA minutes propose employing regulators under the umbrella of the China Ski Association who would oversee the quality of training and ensure that levels met ISIA minimum standards.

The minutes also noted that China had been granted observer status by the ISIA, an important step on its way to becoming a full member.

Following extensive investment into and construction of Genting Secret Garden in Chongli, the Malaysian Prime Minister has singled the project out as a shining example of a world class facility being provided with his country’s backing.  With a planned 88 slopes served by 22 modern lifts, the resort certainly has lofty ambitions, and with the construction of a new high-speed railway from central Beijing already underway, is well placed to benefit from the expected boom in China’s middle class winter sports fans.

Following on from Genting’s huge investment in the Genting Secret Garden Resort – future site of the 2022 Olympic Freestyle events – multiple companies have shown interest in returning the favour by investing in Malaysia.  Amongst the projects under consideration are technology complexes, high-speed railway projectes and intra-city rail links.  Malaysia has also given its full backing to the private Genting Secret Garden project, and appears keen to encourage further deals based on its initial success.
